Markets

There are lots of great markets both indoor and outdoor where you can shop till you drop.

Be prepared to bargain in these places.  You can typically walk away with the goods at about one third of the asking price, so don't be shy.

  • Panjiayuan - Great for picking up all sorts of treasures from "antique" furniture to Chinese style paintings to liven up your living room.

Third Ring Road at Panjiayuan Bridge.

  • Hong Qiao Market - Indoor market close to Temple of Heaven, Chongwenmen.  You'll find fake famous brand names such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, as well as "antiques".  It's also known as the pearl market because you can also find a wide variety of pearls for sale on the top floor.
  • Silk Alley (also known as the Silk Market) was one of Beijing's most famous shopping attractions, selling famous clothing brand names such as North Face and Timberland as well as Rolex watches and Mont Blanc pens. Sadly it no longer exists and was closed in early 2005 - RIP.

Groceries You can find almost anything in Beijing if you look hard enough, although you may have to pay a price.
  • Lufthansa Centre - Located on the east third ring road between the Hilton Hotel and Hard Rock Cafe, the supermarket is in the basement.
  • Friendship Store has a supermarket on the ground floor where you can find imported products at imported prices.
