| Attica |
The latest club to emerge on Shanghai's prestigious Bund,
this is a big club with main dance room as well as a more intimate hip hop
room if that's your thing along with not one but two rooftop terraces.
11/F, 15 Zhongshan Dong Er Lu.
Tel: 6373-3588. |
| Babyface |
Absolutely the place to visit if you want
a more Chinese club experience away from the standard expat haunts.
Watch Chinese big shots down bottles of Chivas Regal with green tea with
their gorgeous young floozies, while shaking their heads from side to side
to the loud music. Unit 101 Shanghai Square, 138 Huaihai Zhong Lu. Tel: 6375-6667. |
| Bar Rouge |
Stunning view of the Bund at night is one of the
reasons why this place is packed with Shanghai's elite and wannabes, it's a
must for visitors to Shanghai even though it's full of pretentious Champagne
guzzling westerners on big expat salaries and the inevitable high class
hookers targeting the lonely business traveller.
7/F, 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu.
Tel: 6339-1199. |
| Big Bamboo |
Down to earth, friendly American-style restaurant-pub with sports on TV
(including English premiership matches) and free wi-fi.
A great place to have a relaxing drink and shoot some pool, although the
food is a little disappointing. 132 Nanyang Road (near Xikang Road), Shanghai. Tel: 6256 2265. |
| Blue Ice Club |
Away from the main bar areas, this underground
club is popular with the younger student crowd who enjoy the fixed price
open bar nights and hip hop beats. 5 Yongfu Lu by Fuxing Xi Lu. Tel: 6437-0400. |
| Bon Bon |
Large popular club with great sound system
and a constant stream of world famous DJs including recently DJ Lord from
Public Enemy, Jay-Z's DJ (DJ Green Lantern) and DJ Jazzy Jeff who I hope
needs no introduction. Check the website for the latest list of events and guests.
2/F Yunhai Tower, 1331 Huaihai Zhong Lu
(by Bao qing Road). |
| Captain's Bar |
The Bund on a budget. 6th floor of the
Captain's Youth Hostel at 37 Fuzhou Road just by the Bund. You get the
same views at much lower cost than the more upscale Bar Rouge, an no
annoying pretentious morons! Tel: 021 6323-7869. |
| Malones |
Great burgers, decent live band, American-style
sports bar with pool tables upstairs and live band down below. 257 Tongren Lu (just round the corner from the Portman Ritz Carlton). Tel: 6247 2400. |
| Mint Club |
Popular small club on Tong Ren Lu behind the
Portman (Ritz Carlton) with special theme nights including Salsa and girls
only nights as well as guest DJs from overseas.
333 Tong Ren Lu.
Tel:

| Muse | Slightly out
of the way from the main entertainment areas of Xintiandi and Heng Shan
Road, Muse is still a very popular venue for the hip, cool crowd, including
a large proportion of expats. Located on two floors with separate DJ playing
different sounds to accommodate different tastes. Apparently part owned by
Hong Kong actress Carina Lau. 68 Yu Yao Lu (near Xi Kang Lu). Tel: 6218 8166. |
| O'Malley's Irish Pub | Outdoor
seating available and real fireplace keeps your fingers warm in winter. 42 Taojiang Road (by Hengshan Road), Shanghai. Tel: 6474 4533. |
| Park 97 |
Still going strong after more than 5 years, this is still
the place to be on the weekend in Shanghai. Several different sections
including lounge upstairs with more mellow live music, as well as a variety
of dining choices, all under one roof. 2A Gaolan Road, just off Sinan Lu, (inside Fuxing Park). Tel: 5383 2328. |
| Velvet Lounge |
I almost hesitated before posting this because I
don't want everyone to know about it. No dance floor, just comfy
velvet sofas and dim, colourful lighting. By far the coolest bar if
you want to chill and have a nice civilised cocktail in chic and stylish
surroundings. They also have excellent snacks, including great pizzas
if you didn't have time for supper before heading out.
1/F, Bldg 3-4, 913 Julu Lu.
Tel: 5403-2976. |
| Windows Scoreboard |
Slightly different to the other Windows
branches, with more of a sports bar feel and the music leaning more to rock
that R&B or hip hop. The drinks though are still cheap by Shanghai
standards, which means cheap by any standard! 3/F, 681 Huaihai Zhong Lu. Tel: 5382 7757. |
| Windows Too |
Cheapest drinks in town, well below the standard prices
of Park 97 and Xintiandi, this is THE place to come for a good night out
without burning a hole in your pocket. Largely young crowded moving to
hip hop and R&B beats. Nanjing Road West, Shanghai (2nd floor of the Jiu Guang department store, just east of Jing An Temple). |
